Akaroa Village with its quaint European feel nestled in the heart of an ancient flooded volcano guarantees you a trip to remember!
Heading off on your journey 90km (60 miles) from Christchurch's Sumner beach, head west up and over Evans Pass to catch your first glimpse of the sea filled volcanic crater that is Lyttelton harbour. From here following the winding road down to the port and then onwards through the bays of Corsair, Cass, Rapaki and Governors - you will encounter the hidden side of Christchurch!
Once arriving at the Teddington Flats weave yourself up and over Gebbies Pass where you will find yourself approaching New Zealand's largest Coastal lake, LakeEllesmere (famous for its fowl shooting and eels!). Before heading up the valley to Little River, the coastline at Birdlings Flat with its fierce surf is a must see!
After a cup of coffee at Little River, hang on for a twisting, turning ascent to the Hilltop Tavern. From here you will be presented with spectacular views across the harbour to Akaroa and the outer bays.
The road descends to Barry's Bay, then passes through another four bays with small hills between them before reach the charming European Village, Akaroa.
