Breathtaking Kaikoura is a seaside town sandwiched between majestic mountains and the rugged Pacific Coastline.
The road north from Christchurch of 182km (114 miles) takes you through the attractive wine growing area of the Waipara District, before reaching the small settlement of Greta Valley. A small diversion here out to Motunau Beach and back is advised, not only to visit this quaint little fishing and holiday settlement with its crazy fossilised rocks, but the road to get there is a drivers dream!
Further north you will approach the hub of the regions farming community, Cheviot. Another short diversion to the east will bring you to one of the South Islands best kept secrets, Gore Bay, with a safe swimming beach and great day walks - a real retreat!
Back on the main road, head onwards through the Hunderlee Hills and then travel the fantastic windy coastal road between cliffs and ocean before arriving in magical Kaikoura.
Kaikoura (meaning 'feed of crayfish' in Maori) is a marine wonderland. Beneath the water surface are deep canyons providing a home to an exiting array of amazing sea creatures - including the giant sperm whale!
